This talk will look at the role ‘Places of Fascism’ still have in contemporary Italy and to what extent the shift in both the perception and fortune of fascist material legacies mirrors the renegotiation of the dictatorial past. The presentation merges research from both the author’s PhD and her post-doc work while affiliated to the German Historical Institute in Rome and the Istituto Nazionale Ferruccio Parri. The talk will also questions whether public perception of these sites has changed recently in line with international debate over contested monuments and considers how their transformation into heritage sites or exhibitions signifies a shift from the post-war interpretation.
